Talk about the best and most convenient location for a railroad history and interactive experience in South Dakota – right next to the Black Hills Central Railroad's depot in Hill City!
The South Dakota State Railroad Museum (SDSRM) is a South Dakota 501c3 not for profit organization which operates independently of the Black Hills Central Railroad. However, the Museum's proximity to the BHC depot, main line, and train operations allow the best location for such a rail-related experience in South Dakota.
The focus of the Museum's activities and collections is memorabilia, rolling stock, and items related to the dozens of railroad companies that have served South Dakota from 1872 to the current time. Additional railroad interpretation is also featured, including a large HO model railroad layout depicting South Dakota scenes in miniature, and an impressive 8 by 75-foot timeline/collage of South Dakota and American railroading.
The Museum features other interactive displays and seasonal activities (including the popular annual Trees and Trains Christmas/Holiday show incorporating scale model trains and seasonal decorations) for all ages are included on a rotating basis. Visitors, members, volunteers, and docents are welcome to participate in programming and exhibit construction as well as specialized educational events and classes on and off-site.
