Riding the Train

Keystone Depot
The 1880 Train features steam powered rail excursions from either Hill City or Keystone, South Dakota from mid-May to mid-October. Each 10-mile leg takes approximately one hour and features a narrated history of the mining districts and communities served by the original rail line. Round trip departures are available from either community depending on the train schedule.
The beautiful mountainous terrain along the route has some of the steepest grades in the country, and the track has sharp curves.

The vintage engine works hard to travel uphill, while downhills are taken slowly, as per federally regulated safety protocols. Lower speeds also reduce maintenance costs, wear and tear on tracks and equipment, and result in higher overall fuel efficiencies for the oil-fired steam engines.
Experience the sounds of an engine meeting the challenge of a grade, watch for historic settlements that line the scenic route, and enjoy the rock cliffs, mountain peaks, forests, and glimpses of wildlife. Join the growing ranks of the 1880 Train Slow Travel Club and share how you and your family found ways to unplug, unwind, connect and enjoy the journey!
